I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello… 2013

Sometime between when I saw him on Christmas Day and when I went to feed and brush him the next morning, sweet Remus passed away. He was almost 18, and he’d been with me through nearly all of my adult life. I unfortunately was home alone with the kids when I found him and I had to lock myself in my room until I got over my crying jag so that Michael and I could tell Ian, together, that Goodbye had come for his Kitty Friend. He took it better than I did, of course, because children always do. I realize that not everyone is a cat person, but even if you despise cats, it’s hard to ignore the fact that 18 years is a long relationship with anything or anyone. And saying goodbye to something you’ve loved for 18 years… well, that’s hard. And it makes you think about things.

Romulus and Remus, together again. RIP sweet kitties.

I remember that when I was in my early twenties I felt as though I was terribly far from both my childhood and from old age. I don’t presume to speak for YOU, but from having talked with other people it seems I was not completely alone in feeling that way. It seemed as though time spread out before me in vast swathes- my life was not yet written, and anything could happen. Anything at all.

And then I had children. Having kids changed my entire relationship with time. Being there through the first few years of their lives made me realize how very fast I am going through those vast swathes of time I once thought lay before me. They also bring back my own childhood so vividly that I sometimes feel as though nothing but a few heartbeats or a breath separates me from either my childhood or from the time when I sincerely hope to find myself “stricken in years.”  Ian went from a newborn to a Kindergartener in a blink of the proverbial eye. Suddenly I feel time’s passage  like I’m sledding down a 90 degree drop with “OLD AGE” embossed at the bottom, and There Are No Brakes. The thing about time is that there is no getting off this ride. (Unless you’re the Doctor. Which reminds me that I am still ticked off that my DVR did not record the Christmas Special. But never mind.)

Anything can still happen, but what I would like to happen is for me to be strong well into my kids’ adulthood and hopefully well into the lives of THEIR kids. I feel very fortunate that my parents are healthy enough to enjoy my children. I would like my boys, someday, when they have fallen in love and gotten married and become awesome Daddies, to be able to have me pay forward even the smallest part of what Rama and Raba have been to them. I aspire to be a Strong Grandma.

Monday Progress Report:

I will have progress photos for you tomorrow. Sorry, we just didn’t get to it today.

I feel like I should specify here that I’m tracking my TOTAL progress. So when I say + or -, I mean vs. day 1, not since my last progress report. It helps me to keep the big picture in mind, so I don’t get discouraged on weeks where progress is smaller.

Day: 50
The scale has moved: -12 lbs
The inches have changed: -13.5 inches
I feel: Ready to move into week 8 and 2013 STRONGER and LIGHTER. Yes, we can!
I’ve walked: 59.89 miles and counting!

Floppy Eared Bunny Pattern

20121223-142816.jpgThis floppy eared stuffed bunny has articulated joints, requires no hand sewing, and takes just 1/4 yard of fabric, so he is also perfect for using up scraps from your stash. Download here: FloppyEarBunnyPattern12-2012semelesriches

The pattern does NOT include seam allowances. I recommend that you use this pattern by printing it onto cardstock, cut out your pattern pieces, and then then trace them onto your material on the wrong side. Sew along the line and THEN cut your pieces out. This allows you to work more precisely and without worrying that tiny pieces will be destroyed by bobbin snatch. Use a short stitch length (I like 1.5 on my machine) and GO SLOWLY.

Apply the appliques to the rabbit front first. I prefer to freehand my appliques and the face, but if you prefer, I have included some applique pieces in the pattern. Just use a tracing wheel and pattern transfer paper to mark where the applique pieces should go, sew them in place, and then flip the material over and trace the body piece onto your fabric. You can embroider or draw/paint a face. I like the bar stitch on the widest setting for eyes and nose.

Sew around the body, leaving open where indicated. Sew around each limb and ear. Cut out the ear and limbs and turn them inside out. Press and topstitch your ears- I like to use a decorative stitch- and create the dart that shapes the ears. Then, poke the bottom end of the ears out through the opening in the top of the head and sew the rest of the head closed. turn the body and head right side out. (You should start to see your rabbit’s personality now!)

Stuff the limbs. Place the arms in the openings on each side of the body and sew in place. Stuff the body, turn up the bottom of the body opening, and sew closed with the legs in place. Now you’re finished except for showering the bunny with love!

Transcendent dawn

I love going for my walk really early on non-work days. Because when I’m out there before people get up and start rushing around and doing all the things they do, I can look at the lights in the windows and feel like we are all in this together. Like We are all alone together in the dawn, and I can manage to forget that a lot of the time people are a-holes or mad at each other and cranky. For a little while everyone is still relaxed and happy. The day has a clean slate.

Day: 43
The scale has moved: -12 lbs
The inches have changed: -12 inches
I feel: Very positive! I think I can start the 10 lb slimdown Xtreme next week.
I’ve walked: 48.7 miles and counting!

BRING ON WEEK 7! Yes, we can!

Merry, Merry and to all… a good 2013!

I hope the close of 2012 finds you well and happy! We have plans to spend the last few days of this year just like we did the rest of them- being a little too loud, smiling as hard as we can, laughing often, and loving always. We wish the same for all of you- may 2013 be full of good things, too numerous to count.

As you know, we stopped mailing the bulk of our holiday cards a few years ago and I’ve really never been one for the “Holiday Letter,” probably because I can’t imaging summing up an entire year in a format short enough to read in a single sitting. But, stay in touch, okay? We love you all.

Appliqué bunny

I’m going to refine this before I make the pattern. I think the arms being one piece with the body makes it look too blocky. This one is wearing a sad face because I’ve made him for a sick friend. But I will have a PDF for this in the patterns section soon. As shown, he took just 1/4 yard of fabric plus the appliqué scraps.

Kids’ casserole

20121219-170854.jpg
1/2 lb of mini penne, cooked
1/2 cup plain, nonfat Greek yogurt
1/2 apple, chopped
1/4 cup shredded carrots
1/4 cup grated cheddar

Microwave the apple and carrots for about 1 minute. Mix all ingredients except cheese in a microwave safe casserole. Top with cheese. Microwave 30 seconds to melt cheese.

(If you have a round covered baker, or other small, covered stoneware casserole, add the pasta with liquid just to cover the pasta and microwave on high for four minutes, stir, do 3 minutes, stir, add apples and carrots and do 2 more minutes. Add yogurt, top with cheese, and give it 30 seconds. Also, I used chicken broth for the noodle cooking liquid. Easy peasy, and one dish cleanup.)

Overheard

20121219-153126.jpg
Keeghan: (holding a brush) Mwush. Mwush. MWUSH!
Michael: what is he saying?
Me: I can’t tell.
Keeghan: Mwush!
Me: wait- Keeghan, are you saying BRUSH?
Keeghan: Yes.

It must be so difficult to live your life surrounded by the painfully slow to understand…

White bean and fennel soup

Well, almost. I planned to make this for dinner but it turns out my can of white beans is actually a can of chick peas. Close enough.

20121217-135536.jpg
Yes, I just threw all the ingredients in the crock pot, rather than follow the carefully devised directions. Aaaaand… I’m done making dinner!

(oh, and don’t tell anyone, but I threw in some leftover chicken and I’m likely to leave out the spinach since 007 doesn’t care for it.)
