Now all the animals are ready for winter!

Yes, the little slave driver convinced me to build this for him. Apparently it’s meant to house all his toy animals. Apparently said toy animals also have a lot of equipment that needs to be stored for the winter. And they have to do that by climbing up the wall, over the roof, and down through the door. Go figure.

What if God was one of us?

From the back of the car: “Mommy, what’s God?”

I told him that “God” is a word we use to describe all the good things in the world, and that since no one completely understands exactly what God is, people have different ideas about it and sometimes disagree. Also, that although you can’t see God, sometimes you can feel it inside yourself. Which is an oversimplification, naturally, but he is only 4 after all.

Ian Watching Hurricane Irene

yes, that’s right, we are in the thick of it here in Northern VA, where we had an earthquake (5.8!) on Tuesday and Hurricane Irene on Saturday night. Ian woke up right after the power failed and realized his night light was out. And he asked what all that noise was. Normally once we’re in bed the rule is we stay there until “MoMo” the alarm clock wakes up, but, I thought, “how often am I going to be able to let him sit on the couch and watch a hurricane with me?”

"We're staying in from this one, Mommy!"

“This is a bad storm, Mommy. And I know. (Holds up 4 fingers, parallel to the ground, and counts on fingers.) Because these three here- 1,2,3, these are good storms. But this one, this fourth one down here? This is a bad storm. We’re staying in from this one, Mommy, because this is a Bad Storm.”
